What Does a Chinese Company Background Check Investigate? Simple, Standard, and Deep Explained

Informe de antecedentes de una empresa china elaborado por Lafa Legal con los tres niveles de análisis

Before signing a contract or wiring a deposit to a supplier in China, you can learn that company’s real track record. That is exactly what a background check report is: a document that gathers, verifies, and organizes the publicly available information about a Chinese company, so that you decide based on data — not assumptions.

What exactly does it investigate?

A background check report goes far beyond confirming that a company exists. The investigation starts with China’s state corporate registry, where each company’s official records are kept: registered legal name, unified social credit code, legal representative, registered capital, date of incorporation, address, operating status, authorized business activities, sector-specific licenses and permits, as well as shareholdings and the changes recorded throughout its history.

All of this information is public — and it is in Chinese. The value of a professional report is not accessing it, but interpreting it correctly and presenting it in English, with the legal and commercial context you need to make your decision.

The three levels: what makes them different?

Simple level. This is the starting point. It is a fast report with the company’s basic information: legal identity, operating status, legal representative, and essential registry data. It serves to confirm that you are dealing with a real, active company, and it is ideal as a first review before moving a negotiation forward.

Standard level. It includes everything above and adds a layer of reputation and track record: participation in public tenders, appearances on social media and in news outlets, and administrative rulings issued against the company. This level gives you a fuller picture of how the company behaves in the real market.

Deep level. This is the most exhaustive analysis of the company: it cross-references registry information with its operating history, corporate connections, significant changes, and any risk signals detectable in public sources. Please note that no level includes internal financial data, as this information is treated as secret in China and is not publicly available.

Is it worth it?

Think in relative terms. A background check report costs a fraction of what a lost deposit, merchandise that never arrives, or an international lawsuit represents. And it is not only useful for detecting risks — it also gives you negotiation leverage. Knowing whether your counterpart is a manufacturer or an intermediary, how long it has been operating, and what track record it has allows you to negotiate better payment and delivery terms.

Besides, verification signals professionalism. Chinese companies that work with international clients value it, because it shows them that you operate with real professionalism and commitment.
